The Goalkeepers
Nominee: Josh Griffiths
Signing Josh Griffiths on loan from West Brom has proven an excellent bit of business and rarely has it looked a more important move than last month.
The 19-year-old was instrumental as Cheltenham Town secured promotion to League One in April – a month in which all but one of their games was decided by a one-goal margin or less.
Given how tight many of their games were, Griffiths’ 10 saves and four clean sheets were vital.
The Defenders
Nominee: Alex Baptiste
His Bolton teammate Ricardo Santos has rightly received a huge amount of praise this season but it was Alex Baptiste that stood out in the Trotters backline last month.
With four wins and a draw in seven games, the April form of Ian Evatt’s side has moved them to within touching distance of promotion and Baptiste’s dominant defending has been integral – winning a monumental 46 aerial duels as he helped his side keep four clean sheets.
The Midfielders
Nominees: Tom Conlon, Conor McAleny
April was a near-flawless month for Port Vale, who went unbeaten and claimed 16 points from a possible 18.
Tom Conlon’s contributions in midfield were vital to that, with the 25-year-old showcasing his qualities not just going forward but defensively as well.
Conlon proved he can do it all, scoring three times and making 18 tackles last month.
Conor McAleny proved too much for opposition sides to handle in April.
The attacking midfielder has had a brilliant season and was in stunning form last month – scoring five times and making five key passes.
His performances in April are likely to mean he isn’t short of options when his contract expires in the summer.
The Forwards
Nominees: Carlos Mendes Gomes, Ian Henderson
Morecambe kept themselves within touching distance of automatic promotion in April and Carlos Mendes Gomes proved a nuisance for opposing defences throughout.
The 22-year-old forward is having a brilliant season and dazzled again last month, with his performance in the 4-3 win against Oldham near-perfect.
In all, Gomes added three goals and two assists for the Shrimps last month.
Salford City’s play-off dreams are still alive heading into the final day fixtures and that is due in no small part to the April form of Ian Henderson.
Salford lost just once all month, taking five wins and two draws from their eight games, with their experienced striker producing the goods time and time again.
Henderson grabbed six goals and an assist in April – a goalscoring run that has pushed him close to 20 for the season.
